Course Summary

This 8-hour Visual Observer course is designed to meet the needs of all public safety agencies with existing Unmanned Aircraft System programs.  The curriculum focuses on the skills required by a UAS Visual Observer (VO) to support operations under Part 107 or a Certificate of Authorization (COA). The class will teach the student UAS safety, flying basics, team communication, and general program operations. This course is ideal for first responders working alongside a UAS team member to provide additional support during visual line-of-sight operations.

Students will:

  • Examine the roles and responsibilities of the Visual Observer
  • Demonstrate preflight and emergency safety procedures
  • Demonstrate UAS flight setup and support responsibilities during operations
  • Learn the application of laws and regulations governing UAS aircraft
  • Examination of types of UAS operations, capabilities, and limits, including policy, equipment, team structure, and missions
  • Evaluate the suitability for UAS operations within the operational environment
  • Review regulations under Part 107, including operational waivers and Operations under authorization (COA)
  • Learn basic UAS piloting skills
